Two sisters were killed and another person injured in the old capital of Spanish Town in central parish of St. Catherine on Thursday night, as security officials placed the area under a security blanket on Friday.
Police said that the shootings close to the Spanish Town Market resulted in the murders of the sisters identified as Heather Cassanova and Latoya Reddie.
Reports said that the sisters were at the usually busy intersection late Thursday when a group of men walked up and opened fire hitting them several times. A man who was standing nearby sustained gunshot wounds.
The sisters were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead. No motive has been established for the killings.
Senior Superintendent Anthony Castelle, who acknowledged that the authorities have stepped up their presence in the area, said also no permission will be given for public gatherings including dances, until further notice,
Prime Minister Bruce Golding in his recent budget presentation stated that the figure is still too high.
But he acknowledged that the security forces operate within financial constraints and more resources and better equipment are needed to carry out the fight against crime.
